Three centuries of Folies Bergère history

A stone’s throw from the Grands Boulevards, in the 9tharrondissement of Paris, the Folies Bergère were born at the end of the Second Empire, and opened on May 1, 1869.

They are d first called the Folies Trévise, and its architect, Plumeret, had in mind to design the most important of the music halls in Paris. However, success was not forthcoming when this café-concert opened, and it even turned into a political meeting room during the war of 1870.

In 1871, Léon Sari bought the place, and launched large works. Success is finally there, the public loves the pantomimes, operettas and circus acts offered.

It was not until the end of the 19th century that the music-hall revue was born, and that feathers appeared on stage. The success is such that many big stars parade on stage, and in particular Mistinguett and Maurice Chevalier.

Feathers, pomp and glitter are on the menu every evening, making the Folies Bergère the most famous entertainment venue in Paris.

Today, the Folies Bergère Paris is a theater that offers various shows, such as light comedies, musicals, concerts, one-man shows, gospel choirs, a cabaret…
