From the Cadet Résidence, we recommend that you visit the Gustave Moreau Museum, a tribute to this great Symbolist painter.

The Gustave Moreau Museum

Located in the 9tharrondissement of Paris, not far from the Hôtel de la Cadet Résidence, the Gustave Moreau Museum is a national museum housed in the painter’s former studio.

We discover 14,000 works by different authors, including the artist’s paintings, but also his watercolours, his drawings and tracings, as well as his wax sculptures.

Presentation of the Gustave Moreau

The Museum is housed in a 3-storey building, where the ground floor comprises 6 rooms, each opening onto a small garden. Four of them are dedicated to drawings and sketches, and one of the four is even dedicated to the great Italian masters.

On the first floor, we find theapartment of the Moreau family, with the dining room, a boudoir, a bedroom, an office-library and a hallway.

On the second floor, we discoverGustave Moreau’s studio, before going to the third floor, where two rooms are devoted to the greatest works.

The history of the Gustave Moreau museum

At the beginning of the 20th century, rue de La Rochefoucauld was located in the heart of New Athens, a district at the foot of the Montmartre hill very popular with artists and writers. It is at number 34 of this street that Gustave Moreau’s master, François-Édouard Picot, lives and sets up his studio.

In 1852, the parents of Gustave Moreau invested in the name of their son in a house-workshop in this artistic district, at 14 rue de La Rochefoucauld. The whole family settled there in cramped conditions, before the hotel was extended in 1896. The construction was then raised by one floor, allowing the painter to exhibit his greatest works in the workshops of the 2nd3rd andfloors .

Gustave Moreau would spend his whole life there, and died in 1898. Shortly before his death, he had nevertheless bequeathed his building and everything it contained to the State, demanding that everything remain as it was.

The Gustave Moreau museum then opened its doors in 1903, and will be completely renovated in 2015.
