Visit the Grévin museum in 2022 near our aparthotel

  • 21/10/2022
  • Uncategorized

Known throughout the world, the Grévin museum is one of the must-sees during a stay in Paris. This historic Parisian place is the occasion or never to rub shoulders with the biggest celebrities, and to pose with your idol, in wax statue version. To facilitate your visit, the Cadet Residence offers studios and apartments close to the Grévin museum.

The famous Grévin museum

With more than 700,000 visitors a year, the Grévin museum has around 250 statues of public figures and fictional characters. Let’s discover this unique exhibition space in France.

The history of the Grévin

museum The Grévin museum, in the 9tharrondissement of Paris, was largely inspired by the Madame Tussaud museum in London. It then opened its doors 50 years later, in 1882, on the Grands Boulevards of Paris.

Originally, the aim of the museum and its founder, Arthur Meyer, was to be able to present the statues of public figures to the public. Indeed, photography was still underdeveloped, and it was difficult to put a face to a name. Arthur Meyer therefore called on Alfred Grévin, sculptor and painter of the time, to create the wax figures.

Over time, the wax museum has become both a cultural and entertaining tourist spot, where visitors enjoy taking selfies with celebrities and fictional characters.

What can be found at the Grévin museum?

Since its creation, no less than 2,000 statues have been created and exhibited. There are then very varied

  • personalities: Historical personalities (Gandhi, General de Gaulle, Louis XIV, Barack Obama, Emmanuel Macron…)
  • Singers (Céline Dion, Michael Jackson, Johnny Hallyday, Claude François, Lady Gaga, Madonna… );
  • Movie stars (Brad Pitt, Jean Gabin, Gérard Jugnot, Georges Clooney, Omar Sy…);
  • Athletes (Kylian Mbappé, David Douillet, Zinédine Zidane, Tony Parker, Teddy Riner…);
  • Artists (Jean-Paul Gaultier, Leonardo da Vinci, Molière…);
  • Comedians (Pierre Palmade, Muriel Robin, Franck Dubosc…)…

Many wax statues are also staged to represent significant events in the history of France, such as the Massacre of Saint-Barthélémy, or the assassination of Marat.

How are the wax figures chosen?

Each year, 4 new personalities enter the Grévin museum, whether French or international. To select the lucky winners, theGrévin Academy has met every year since 2001, and calls on Internet users to choose 6 celebrities whose clones they would like to see in the museum. The academy then chooses 4 of the 6, which will be exhibited at the museum in the following year.

The Grévin Academy is made up of many celebrities, such as Stéphane Berne, Laurent Boyer, Jacques Pessis…

How are the wax statues made?

After being selected by the jury of the Grévin Academy, the celebrity must be patient before seeing his statue exhibited at the museum. Indeed, 6 months of work are necessary, and more than 600 photos are necessary to achieve a faithful reproduction. The hair is implanted one by one, and the hands are cast in plaster, to represent even the slightest vein of the star.

Your family trip to Paris

Adults and children will love discovering Paris, and everyone will find their interest there through the many sites and multiple activities offered at the different sites. Here are some ideas for family visits close to the Cadet residence.

Visit the Opéra Garnier district

Let’s start our Parisian journey in the Opéra Garnier district, just a stone’s throw from the Cadet aparthotel.

Exploring the Opéra Garnier

The opera house in Paris was originally located in rue Le Peletier, before Napoleon III was the victim of an attack there in 1858 (he was fortunately spared). From then on, the emperor decided to rebuild the opera in a street less prone to attacks. A competition is then organized to determine which architect will be responsible for designing this new large theatre. Charles Garnier is thus designated, and Baron Haussmann chooses the new location of the opera. Work thus began in 1861 and was completed in 1875.

Parisians and tourists from all over the world then discovered a sumptuous building, with architecture inspired by the Second Empire style. Adorned with many statues and gilding, theOpéra Garnier is worth a visit both for its ostentatious facade, but also for its luxurious interior.

Today, the Opéra Garnier is mainly dedicated to ballets, but it is also possible to access it for a simple visit, outside show times.

Meet the statues of the Grévin museum

At the bottom of the boulevard de Montmartre, the Grévin museum seduces young and old with its world famous wax statues.

Built in 1882, this museum was initially designed to allow Parisians to discover the faces of the personalities who make the headlines. Today, in the era of television and digital technology, the museum’s notoriety persists, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the wax statue very realistic

Thus gather in this establishment the personalities of the world of music, cinema, football, and many other fields.

The Grévin museum then offers a fun experience for children, who can take a selfie with Lady Gaga or Cristiano Ronaldo, but also for adults, who will have the privilege of meeting Leonardo da Vinci, or even Louis XIV.

Shopping in the Opéra district

Shoppers will be delighted to find themselves in the capital of fashion, and even more, a stone’s throw from Galeries Lafayette and Printemps Haussmann.

These two big names in fashion are undeniably must-haves for fashionistas looking for exceptional pieces.

Then go to Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, the largest store in Europe, where luxury boutiques compete in beauty and temptation. Ready-to-wear obviously bears witness to French know-how, but there are also many brands of all kinds.

At Printemps Haussmann, between the Opéra Garnier and Saint-Lazare station, fashion lovers are not left wanting. Known for having invented the concept of sales, the Printemps Haussmann imposes itself on 27 floors and 43,500 m², offering shops of all kinds: women’s, men’s and children’s fashion, home, beauty…

If the Galeries Lafayette and the Printemps Haussmann are indisputably high places of French fashion, they are also buildings with breathtaking architecture, testimony to the rich cultural heritage of the country.

Visit the Montmartre district

The continuation of the discovery of Paris takes us to the Montmartre district, where the bohemian atmosphere awaits you in a bubble out of time.

Rue des Martyrs

Straddling the 9thand 18tharrondissements of Paris, rue des Martyrs is more of a part of the Pigalle district, but it is a stone’s throw from Montmartre, and leads to the Sacré-Coeur. Very commercial, this typically Parisian street offers a picturesque charm to discover, between festive cabarets, lively cafes and legendary concert halls.

The rue des Martyrs then offers you two faces: during the day, it is very commercial, but at night, it is transformed into a Mecca for Parisian parties.

Visiting the Sacré-Coeur

At the top of the Montmartre hill, overlooking Paris, the Sacré-Coeur basilica is one of the capital’s most emblematic historical monuments. With its Romano-Byzantine architecture, the building stands out with its white color. But to get there, you will have to earn it, and climb the 222 steps that provide access to the basilica.

Inside, visitors are captivated by the beauty of the largest mosaic in France which decorates the ceiling, but also by its crypt.

To put stars in the eyes of children and parents, treat yourself to the experience of climbing on the dome of the basilica. You will then enjoy a 360° view of Paris and its marvels: Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Panthéon, Montparnasse tower…

Going down, discover the picturesque atmosphere of the small Parisian streets, passing by the Place du Tertre, and until you reach the famous Moulin Rouge.Are you planning to stay in Paris with your family ? The Cadet residence is the ideal pied-à-terre to enjoy all of Paris. Close to all transport, the hotel will allow you to visit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe, and many other monuments that will appeal to young and old.
