Visit the Père Lachaise cemetery

Accessible on foot from the Hotel du Cadran in just 16 minutes, the Père Lachaise cemetery is a unique place to walk, which takes you to the heart of a rich heritage dating back more than 2 centuries.

A story that begins 220 years ago

The Père Lachaise cemetery was built in 1804 to cope with the lack of space to bury the dead in Paris. It was then decided to install it at the top of a hill, on the outskirts of Paris, on the hill which was then called “Champ-l’Évêque”. It was the architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart who then took charge of the project, and from June 1804, the first burials took place in this cemetery in eastern Paris.

The Père Lachaise cemetery takes its name from the Jesuit priest François d’Aix de La Chaize, who lived on the hill of Champ-l’Évêque before the construction of the cemetery.

The largest cemetery in Paris intra muros

After more than 200 years of history and more than 70,000 graves, the cemetery is today the largest cemetery in the capital (43 hectares), but also the most visited in the world, with no less than 3.5 million visitors per year. Still in operation, nearly 10,000 funeral ceremonies are held there each year, and many famous people are buried there today. Among the most visited tombs today, we recognize great artists and famous people from all over the world: Édith Piaf, Alfred de Musset, Oscar Wilde, Yves Montand, Jim Morrison, Marcel Proust, Molière, Eugène Delacroix, Frédéric Chopin….

Other graves attract the curiosity of tourists with their more unusual appearance, such as the tomb of Victor Noir and his bronze statue symbolizing fertility for some, or the tomb of Fernand Arbelot representing him lying and holding his face in his handsa woman’s.

The Père Lachaise cemetery is also home to many commemorative monuments, the best known of which is most certainly the Communards’ wall, which pays tribute to the combatants of the city of Paris who were shot in 1871.

A cemetery with incredible biodiversity

If the cemetery du Père Lachaise, in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, is best known for its graves, yet life is very present there, and the green space it represents is the ideal place for the development of biodiversity. There are then more than 4,000 trees of 80 different species, enough to let the fauna and flora express themselves freely. In addition, the use of phytosanitary products has been prohibited there since 2015, allowing hedgehogs, birds, bats and even foxes to live peacefully and freely.

Of course, the walk around the hotel does not stop there, and your curiosity can push you to the Montmartre hill, the Opera, or the Palais Garnier.

Where to run in Paris near our aparthotel?

  • 21/11/2022
  • Uncategorized

A stay in Paris should not prevent you from doing your little outdoor sports session. On the contrary, some places in the capital are particularly conducive to running and physical exercise. From our hotel, discover the best spots for running in Paris 9.

A short run from the Canal Saint-Martin

From the Canal Saint-Martin to the Parc de la Villette, the setting is ideal for running on flat ground, and discovering the beauties of the capital along the way.

The Saint-Martin canal

Start your sports session at the Saint-Martin canal, on the right bank of Paris, and follow the canal at your own pace. The bars and small bistros offer you a very special and colorful atmosphere, and put you on your feet quietly. Continue to the Villemin garden, and take advantage of your quick visit to admire its beautiful lawn and its pretty bandstand.

The Stalingrad rotunda

Now reach the Bassin de la Villette via the Stalingrad rotunda. You will thus find the Quai de Seine, on the left bank, and thus set off on a most pleasant route of several kilometres.

The Bassin de la Villette

Here you are again on the banks of the Seine, this time with a pretty perspective on the horizon, which will take you to the Parc de la Villette, if you feel like it. You will probably come across petanque or ping-pong players, peaceful walkers and small motor boats. This environment immerses you in a perfect setting to clear your mind and focus on your breath.

The Canal de l’Ourcq

Aren’t you tired? So continue along the Canal de l’Ourcq for a few more kilometers, but don’t forget that you will then have to do the reverse journey to find your hotel room! That said, the Canal de l’Ourcq is particularly good for running, and you can even take the opportunity to see some masterpieces of street art.

Parc de la Villette

Ultimate objective of your sporting outing, Parc de la Villette is finally available to you. Its 55 hectares of green spaces are an opportunity to continue your efforts in a peaceful setting, or catch your breath while enjoying the show.

Running in Parc Monceau, in Paris 8

To vary the pleasures and the level of difficulty, here is another running route for your jogging in the heart of Paris. This time, go to Parc Monceau, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. Admittedly, the park is further from the hotel than the Saint-Martin canal. On the other hand, the charming setting will not make you regret your efforts.

A random jog along the alleys

Close to the Arc de Triomphe, Parc Monceau is located in a rather upscale district, and the general atmosphere plunges you into a certain voluptuousness. You then have the choice of running randomly through the paths of the park, which will allow you to discover the lawns, the rotunda, the majestic trees, the Renaissance arcade and the park basin. On the other hand, it will be difficult to estimate the distance covered.

If you’re aiming for performance and need to know the precise distance of your route, you can follow the circular walkway that goes all the way around the park, following the outermost path each time. You will then know that each lap is 1,100 meters. You can then count the number of laps to estimate the distance traveled.

Good to know: most, if not all, Parc Monceau runners do the laps counter-clockwise!

When to run at Parc Monceau?

Like all parks in Paris, walkers are sometimes numerous, and depending on your objective, busy periods should be avoided. So, if you want to be free to run at your own pace or do interval training without having to slalom between pedestrians, it is better to come on weekday mornings, between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., or on winter evenings.

Of course, the aisles are much busier on sunny days and after school and work. So, if you have the possibility, avoid these peak hours.

For information, Parc Monceau is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from October 1 to April 30, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May 1 to August 31, and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from September 1 to 30.

La Cadet Résidence, your hotel close to the best running spots

Whether you are passing through Paris for a professional stay or for a tourist trip, the Cadet aparthotel opens its doors to you in the heart of the capital.

You will then have plenty of time to go for a run on the banks of the Seine or in a Parisian park, morning or evening, and find refuge in one of our independent apartments and studios. You will find all the necessary comfort for rest and relaxation, with a lounge area, comfortable bedding, an equipped kitchen area, or even a private bathroom.

The team of the Cadet residence then does everything possible to guarantee you an unforgettable stay, by offering you additional paid services, such as the grocery kit, an additional cleaning service, a laundry service (washing machine and dryer )…Whether you are at home or on a trip, you do not deviate from your sports session? Then book a room at the Cadet residence, and take advantage of our routes to run in Paris close to our hotel.
