In 2019, the museum welcomed 9.6 million visitors. It has impressive collections: more than 615,000 works, of which only 35,000 pieces are exhibited in its 360,000 m². Its glass pyramid houses the entrance to the museum and was designed by the Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei. It is the first major construction to be made of laminated glass. It was inaugurated by François Mitterrand in 1988 and 1989. The Palais-Royal is the monumental complex on the other side of the rue de Rivoli; it has a beautiful garden with a fountain and adjoins the Comédie Française, the Constitutional Council, the Banque de France and the Council of State. The Domaine National du Palais-Royal, whose entrance is on rue Saint-Honoré, is also home to the famous Buren Columns and the palace gardens. The Tuileries garden is opposite the Cour carrée Napoléon where the Louvre pyramid and the museum are located; the two are separated by the Place du Carrousel.A bit of HistoryThe palace was a fortified castle in 1190 under King Philip Augustus. Later, Charles V turned the castle into a royal residence, then Philip II took over the residence. Numerous works followed to transform the fortress into a residence and then into a large museum: demolition of wings and construction of new wings in Renaissance style. In 1594, Henri IV united the Louvre palace with the Tuileries palace; this was the period of the “Grand Dessein”. But in 1681, when Louis XIV decided to take the Château de Versailles as his main royal residence, the Louvre remained as it was and work stopped. In the 18th century, new projects were undertaken to complete the “Grand Dessein”, including the transformation of the Louvre into a museum. This project began during the reign of Louis XV and was completed at the time of the Revolution. In 1882, the École du Louvre was created in the Flore wing. Louis XIV made it possible to expand the art collection in the Louvre. The Louvre Museum opened on 10 August 1793, under the name of Museum central des arts de la République. The Louvre pyramid was built in 1983 by Ieoh Ming Pei; the Tuileries garden was redeveloped in 1990.The collectionsThe most famous collections of the Louvre are known throughout the world. The Mona Lisa (1503-1506) by Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous paintings, The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese (1562), The Rite of Napoleon by Jacques Louis David (1806-1807), The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault (1818-1819), and Liberty Guiding the People by Delacroix (1830). Among the most famous sculptures, the museum houses the Venus de Milo representing the goddess Venus from Ancient Greece (100 BC), the Crouching Scribe from Ancient Egypt, the Victory of Samothrace from Ancient Greece (190 BC) or the Winged Bulls of Khorsabad (713 BC).Our apart hotel near the Louvre in ParisThe Cadet residence is a typical Parisian aparthotel ideally located in the 9th arrondissement.
